Nepal Mountain Guide Team

I have recently completed the Everest base camp trek and can say that the best advice I can give is get a guide.

The best guide I found was a gentleman called Sanjib Adhikari he is Independent trekking guide in Nepal. The link to their site is http://www.nepalguideinfo.com/ Email-sanjib-adhikari@hotmail.com
The main thing is he is a family man and very trust worthy I still keep in touch with him now

if you are doing this trek get a guide he will definitely get you through check points with no worries, give you all the history on the route, take pictures of you, tell you about all the other landmarks and mountains on the way, he’ll keep an eye on you for altitude sickness and have emergency contact for helicopter etc, and most of all know the best route for you.
Sanjib really is a great guy and I totally trusted him with myself and my belongings the whole trip,
Sanjb give the reasonable price but also the best service! I checked!

Ponda Taluka Spice Farms

One of the main reasons for the Portuguese taking Goa was to control the spice trade from the east (mostly from Indonesia), so it was a bonus to find that not only were several spices native to the Icrritory, but also that many others could be grown here. Spices and fruits grown in Goa's numerous plantations include cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, lurmeric, ginger, cloves, saffron, pepper and even vanilla, alongside breadfruit, jackfruit, papaya, niiingo, guava and betel nut. At least four such plantations, all in Ponda taluka, are open to the public lor tours where you can see spices growing, learn how they're harvested and sample and purchase various spices. The tours include a superb traditional buffet lunch, eaten off banana palm leaves and nerved in a shady open-air restaurant in one of the plantations. These tours are unashamedly geared low.irds tourists and many visitors arrive on a tour bus, but you can turn up independently and this is paMly one of the best day trips you can do in Goa away from the beaches and historical sites.

    * Sahakari Spice Farm (2312394 / open 8am-6pm daily), on the NH4a about 1 km east of Ponda, is an easily accessible 50 hectare organic plantation owned by the 7th generation of the same family. Tours; Lunch; Feni. http://www.shakarifarms.com
    * Savoi Plantation (2340272) is near the liny village of Savoi Verem, 10km to the northeast of Ponda. This spice plantation is popular with tour groups. Tours; Lunch; Accommodation (2000). Follow the sign on the main road near the village. http://www.savoiplantation.com
    * Tropical Spice Plantation 2340329; open 8am-6pm daily) is in the village of Keri (Querim), about halfway between Savoi Verem and Ponda. Tours.

Margao to Ponda
Afterwards, get onto the ferry that connects Rachol in Salcette to Shiroda in Ponda. Youve just crossed the historical boundary between Catholic Salcette and Hindu Ponda. The landscape changes as you drive up into the forested hills of Shiroda, and the difference is stark. From a flat country road through low paddy, you find yourself rising ever higher and the tree s falling lower as you advance. Every now and then a breadfruit tree, its branches hung low with bounty, marks the way. The thick forests are disorienting after the flatlands of coastal Salcette. The whispering of the leaves adds to the spookiness, and all this doesnt prepare you for your sudden emergence out of the forest and onto the main street of the bustling temple town of Shiroda. Having finally got your bearings and adapted to the different-ness of Ponda, you make your way to the Kamaxi Temple, a remarkably pretty shrine that shows you how Catholic and Hindu met to produce a thing of beauty, literally carved in stone.

Of all the temples of Ponda that Ive visited, none have made as much an impression as that of the Kamaxi of Shiroda. It could well be because I had just exited the solemn halls of the largest seminary in all of Asia. More likely because of the grace of the goddess and her home, complete with Portuguese-inspired mandapa, an excellent example of the Konkani deepmala in her courtyard, a herd of buffaloes, the sheer serenity of the setting, away from the bustling bazaar. If youre pressed for time but want a memorable glimpse of an unseen, unknown Goa on your weekend, take the ferry across the Zuari from the village of Rachol to Shiroda.

Karma Sutra
Ponda, which has the largest cluster of temples in Goa, is the place to go to find old, old temples that are unique for their Iberian-influenced architecture. Some of them date as far back as the 16th century.

The Ganpati Temple in Marcela, a remarkable example of Kadamba-Chalukya architecture, is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The black-stone idol of Ganpati was brought from Jaipur and consecrated here in 1968. The Mahadeva Temple in Tambdi Surla was spared destruction at the hands of the Portuguese because of its inaccessibility. This temple, 66 km from Panjim, traces its ancestry to Hemadri, minister of the Yadava king Ramachandra (circa 1271). It is the only basalt stone specimen of Kadamba-Yadava architecture (12th-13th century) in Goa that is still standing. A motorable road connects Sancordem to this temple.

At Quela, 2 km west of Ponda town is the temple of Devi Shantadurga, built in 1738 by Chhatrapati Shivajis grandson, Shahu. It has a rich and beautiful garbhakunda, the sanctum sanctorum where the deity is kept. A a hillock at Priol along the NH-4A in Ponda is the temple dedicated to Lord Mangueshi, an incarnation of Shiva. A lamp tower stands at the temple entrance and the main altar comprises a golden shesha and lingam. This temple dates back to the 1700s. Also check out the Navadurga Temple in Madkai.

Spicy Ponda
No beaches, no tourists. A Goan truth that Ponda has caught on to. Ponda has always trailed behind Goas tourist bus, but its hooking the holidayers by marketing its spice plantations that are guaranteed to make the eyes as well as the mouth water. Several enterprising Pondekars are combining Pondas essential Hinduness in a sea of Portuguese Christianity with a tour of their spice gardens. Visitors are welcomed with a garland, a tilak and lemon grass tea.

This is good stuff for the kids  it keeps them busy while you learn how pepper, cardamom and all the other spices that you see in plastic packets in your local grocery store are grown. You can also watch as men climb the betel nut trees that stand tall at over a hundred feet above the ground, to pick the nuts. Another attraction is the birds that populate the mango, jackfruit, cashew and chikoo orchards, from pond herons and cattle egret to bush quail, Brahminy ducks and the crested serpent eagle. Round off the tour with a sumptuous vegetarian lunch made out of farm-fresh ingredients. Highly recommended, since the very red earth of Goa seems to add a unique flavour to its fruit.

Dudhsagar and Bondla
Up in the ghats, east of Ponda, the Mandovi River has created Indias second largest waterfall. The river tumbles down a vertical hill face to the plains at Dudhsagar Fall, the cascades showering swimmers at the base with a fine spray. A viaduct spans the  of the falls, and monkeys scamper along the hills that overlook the base. The falls are at their best post-monsoon, till December, and are well worth the time it takes to cover the distance to the ghats near the Karnataka border.

Youll pass the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary on your way to Dudhsagar. The real delights here are the butterflies and numerous species of birds that fill the skies, far more appealing than the caged animals in the zoo at the heart of the sanctuary. The really wild and free animals roam the lush hills around the sanctuary. Far better than spending time at Bondla is to have a quick look, then make for Colem at the south-east of the enclosure, entry point for the more appealing Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary. You will need a few days to appreciate the extent of the endangered wildlife this sanctuary protects, but its a pleasure just to walk through the forests under lush tree cover.

Grand Houses of Salcette by Mario Miranda
One of the factors that gives Goa its unique identity is its Indo-Portuguese architecture. The best examples of this fusion are in the south, where you stumble upon magnificent mansions nestled amidst sprawling rice fields and dense mango groves of Salcette.

Red-tiled roofs, ornate verandahs with trellised railings, large flower gardens leading up to winding staircases which brings you to that unique piece of Goan architecture  the balcao. Gathering place for the family in the evenings, this verandah is usually covered by a conical turret, which gives the facade of the building a dramatic look.

The interior comprises enormous halls, once the scene of many balls and banquets, a prayer hall with an ornate altar, winding corridors and a courtyard in the centre. Called the patro, the courtyard is Hindu Goas influence in a residence which is otherwise Iberian.

These houses also boast of a French influence. The gilt mirrors and chandeliers are all part of the French culture which played an important role in the life of the rich and famous of Goan society. A fine example is the Silver Mansion in Margao. Its turrets are very similar to those of the Louvre Museum in Paris, and the staircase is a modest replica of the grand staircase of the Palace of Versailles.

Situated around the main church square is the Largo da Igreja, one of the most beautiful squares in Goa, with elegant edifices representative of typical 18th century Goan style architecture. These include the residences of the Alvares and their neighbours, the Colacos. The most dramatic house in South Goa is undoubtedly the Menezes Braganca house in the village of Chandor, open to the public, especially if you ask politely.

The nearby village of Loutolim boasts of several 18th century constructions, much as the Miranda Mansion (with their family crest adorning the doorway). The imposing Figueiredo House is one of the most attractive in the village.

Many large and beautiful houses spread out in a radius of about 1 km from the nucleus of the village. The Costa Mansion is now lovingly cared for by a solitary lady, the charming Dona Rosa.

It is very sad indeed that some of these elegant edifices are in a very dilapidated condition. Some of these are almost in ruins, overrun with creepers and wild grass with the residents having immigrated to Brazil and Portugal in search of greener pastures, leaving their palatial homes at the mercy of bugs, termites and thieves.

River Valley Huts

Hotel
Mosquito net and wallpaper

River Valley is at the northern end of Palolem, 50m back from the beach under a circle of coconut palms. There are 10 plywood-and-blue tarpaulin huts, each raised a metre above the sand on stilts and arranged in an L shape around a central open space looking out on forested hills and a lagoon. In front of the huts four hammocks are slung between the trees, and in the far corner there's a common covered seating area with small collection of books and games: chess, backgammon, a volleyball, playing cards, Frisbees, and a carrom board. Opposite, by the gated entrance, is a shared shower block consisting of three cold showers and sit-down toilets in a cold stone building with tiled floors and a corrugated metal roof. Each hut has a porch, table, and chairs outside and a plain interior of two single beds wedged together under a mosquito net, reed mats, a bin, a dim 40-watt light bulb, and a rough coffee table. The four larger, more expensive huts have an extra window, wooden benches instead of plastic chairs, a dining table on the porch, and about a third more floor space, though you hardly feel the benefit as nobody spends much time inside.

River Valley's small size is its biggest selling point. There's a real community feeling here with the limited number of huts and the open space in the centre. The staff is helpful and there are lots of nice touches, like a morning newspaper, night security guard, free locks and lockers, and on-site yoga classes twice a day (100 rupees for an hour and a half). Another big plus is the cleanliness: the sheets and mattress were spotless, and the toilets and the area around the huts are cleaned each morning. There's a small snack menu of toast, omelettes, and drinks, and the prices, though not the cheapest on the beach, are very competitive given the facilities and build of the huts. The only real drawbacks are the music from the Dreamcatcher huts next door, which is both loud and annoying, and the mosquito invasion every sunset.

Rates are 400 rupees for the larger huts and 250 for smaller ones (double occupancy), rising 50 rupees in mid-November and again in mid-December. Singles are 50 rupees less and reductions can sometimes be negotiated on the bigger huts. Checkout is 12pm.

On landing in Goa in 1512, the Portuguese first made churches with little stress on embellishments. Later Classical elements crept in to the church designs. Till the middle of the 18th century the religious buildings informed the style of secular architecture. These buildings were massive two storeyed structures with a small opening on the ground floor and large windows on the first floor. Double storeyed houses were a throwback of the Portuguese double storeyed mansion. Double storied houses which were constructed later show the varied designs that were used for decorating the house.

By the 18th century another style in building construction evolved. It was the single-storeyed house inspired by the Hinducourtyard house.

It is obvious from the buildings dating before the coming of the Portuguse which still survive today that they too imbibed Westernstyle features. With the evolution of the Goan identity, the metamorphised house with features like porch and veranda became important elements inhouse designs.

History

The city was founded in the 15th century as a port for the Vijayanagar and Bahamani kings. Old Goa was the second capital of Bijapur under the rule of Adil Shah. It was surrounded by a moat and contained the Shah's palace, and his mosques and temples. The city of Goa in south-western India was under Portuguese rule from 1510 and became the administrative seat of Portuguese India, although the Viceroy's residence was transferred in 1759 to the future capital, Panaji (then Pangim). It was incorporated in the Republic of India in 1961.

The population was roughly 200,000 by 1543. Malaria and cholera epidemics ravaged the city in the 17th century and it was largely abandoned, only having a remaining population of 1,500 in 1775. It was then that the viceroy moved the palace of Adil Shah to Panaji. In 1835 after religious suppression the city was virtually deserted.

 Demographics

As of 2001 India census[1], Goa Velha had a population of 5411. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Goa Velha has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 71%. In Goa Velha, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

 Churches of old Goa

Old Goa contains churches affiliated to various congregations, including the Se Cathedral (the seat of the Archbishop of Goa), the church of St Francis of Assis, the church of S. Caetano, and notably, the Basilica of Bom Jesus which contains the incorruptible body of Saint Francis Xavier
